Magnetic Spice Rack Saves Precious Galley Space

Anyone who cooks in a boat galley may agree, there are times you find yourself playing magician – attempting recipe magic with whatever happens to be onboard.  One of the best tricks to combat the unexpected magic act is to keep a selection of dried herbs and spices on hand. But unfortunately, stocking the galley pantry full of spice bottles means using up precious space – space typically reserved for actual food.

The Solution? A Magnetic Spice Rack. Spice containers adhere magnetically to an upright surface, providing a tidy space-saving alternative to a cabinet full of loose little bottles. Your spices stay out of the way and when underway, stay secure from tossing about in rough seas.

To store your galley spices magnetically, there are several options:

1. Choose an all-inclusive Magnetic Spice Rack Set like the Lipper International SOHO Magnetic Spice Rack, shown above. The set provides everything you need, including patented see-through spice canisters and stainless steel mounting plate and hardware (does not include spices). You can mount on the backsplash (or any spare wall), under the cabinet or better yet, even inside the cabinet or pantry to keep out of sight.  (These can be an attractive addition to the galley, so depending on your layout, they may just spice up your decor!).  This one is available in a 20 canister and 12 canister set and a 5 piece strip-board set. You can even purchase extra canisters to add to your spice repertoire. Get the magnetic spice rack sets here:

With these spices, you just buy the specially-fitted magnetic strips, adhere to the back of the spice cubes and you’re ready to stick! This solution works great for those who want only a few spices aboard or have very limited galley space. The spice refills come in inexpensive baggies, and you can even purchase empty containers to add your own spices.

3. The third alternative is to go completely D.I.Y. and create your own magnetic spice set-up.  As long as the containers are airtight and corrosion-proof (spices can go rancid quickly, especially around moisture), just mount magnetic strips on the bottom and find (or create) somewhere to stick ‘em!

Important: Don’t forget to keep magnets away from the boat’s compass!

**If you’re not interested in spicing up your galley, the same idea can be used for small parts like nuts, bolts & screws, first aid items or medication, or even fishing tackle. Perfect nautical gift!
